uno, due, tre…
Numbers in Italian
Twenty words to learn, five rules to apply, and every number up to un milione follows. The rules here come from Treccani and the Accademia della Crusca, and every word on the site is checked by a second, separate derivation.
The stress and vowel of each one is on the pronunciation page.
The whole system in five rules
1.Learn 0 to 19 as words
Nothing below twenty is built by rule a learner can use: undici to sedici put the unit first, diciassette to diciannove put dici first.
2.Tens and units join into one word
venti + due is ventidue; quaranta + sette is quarantasette. No hyphen, no space, no e.
3.Before uno and otto the ten loses its vowel
ventuno, ventotto, trentuno, novantotto. They are the only two units that start with a vowel.
4.A compound ending in tre is written tré
tre on its own has no accent; ventitré, centotré and milletré do, because the stress falls on that last syllable.
5.cento and mille need no un
100 is cento and 1,000 is mille. From 2,000 the thousands use mila: duemila, diecimila. A million is a noun: un milione.

Most Italian numbers have one spelling. Where usage varies, this site prints the form Treccani’s Enciclopedia dell’Italiano gives as usual and names the other: 108 is printed centootto, and answer keys accept centotto beside it. Every word, from zero to un milione, is produced by one engine and compared letter for letter with a second derivation written separately (3,000,145 checks). How the words are checked lists every decision and its source.
